It now forms the core display area of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20111111121602\/http:\/www.lcsd.gov.hk\/CE\/Museum\/Coastal\/en\/index.php\">Museum<\/a>\u00a0and the open courtyard that was at its heart has been covered by a specially designed tensile structure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1756\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winkle-picker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/HKMCD_07-copy-768x701.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"701\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winkle-picker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/HKMCD_07-copy-768x701.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.winkle-picker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/HKMCD_07-copy.jpg 877w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This houses the permanent exhibition \u00a0which traces the 600-year history of coastal defence in Hong Kong from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to the present-day Hong Kong Garrison of the People\u2019s Liberation Army (PLA).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Historical Trail allows visitors to wander amongst the conserved underground magazines and batteries on the promontory around the Redoubt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a hot day this can be quite strenuous, but you will be rewarded with some great views across to Lei Yue Mun on Kowloonside.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1755\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winkle-picker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/HKMCD-3-768x512.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winkle-picker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/HKMCD-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.winkle-picker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/HKMCD-3.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reviewing the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20111111121602\/http:\/www.lcsd.gov.hk\/CE\/Museum\/Coastal\/en\/index.php\">Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence<\/a>\u00a0from a purely museum design perspective it would be easy to be dismissive of the conventional display techniques \u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 the tired audiovisual displays in need of an upgrade \u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 the sometimes outmoded interior design \u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026 or the, frankly, less than convincing dioramas \u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1757\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winkle-picker.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/hong-kong-museum-of-coastal-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"309\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But this would be missing the point. The fact is, it works. Designed over ten years ago (by John Dangerfield?) it was opened to the public in July 2000. It stands out amongst museums in Hong Kong in combining a museum experience with an exterior heritage experience \u2013 making it ideal for kids. [This was written before the revitalisation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winkle-picker.com\/projects\/tai-kwun-centre-for-heritage-and-arts\/\">Taikwun<\/a> of course \u2013 Ed.]. It is also distinguished by being one of the few places in Hong Kong where you can find out about the brave members of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps who were involved in some of the bitterest fighting during the Japanese invasion in 1941.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the fort itself, the concept behind the museum has stood the test of time.
